They also continue to update their skills and knowledge to offer\npatients the latest advancements in macular degeneration treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Macular Degeneration?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyeconsultantsofpa.com\/macular-degeneration-reading-pa.html\">Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)<\/a> is a common eye condition that affects the part of the\nretina called the macula which enables you to see fine details as in reading or\ndriving. There are two forms of AMD \u2013 wet and dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dry form\nis much more common and accounts for the large majority (90%) of all cases of\nmacular degeneration disease. This form is characterized by yellow protein\ndeposits called drusen that begin to break down as a natural part of aging and\nbecome deposited on the macula. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wet form\nof AMD is much rarer and is also a much more advanced form of macular\ndegeneration that leads to more serious vision loss. Wet AMD occurs when new\nblood vessels grow underneath the retina and leak blood and fluid, causing\npermanent damage to the light-sensitive cells in the retina. The damage creates\nthe blind spots in central vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Macular Degeneration Detection and Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Early AMD often\nhas no symptoms, so the only way to detect the disease is during a\ncomprehensive dilated eye exam. Unfortunately, AMD has no cure and becomes\nprogressively worse over time. Treatments like laser surgery can however slow\nthe disease progression to preserve your existing vision and reduce vision\nloss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two types of outpatient laser surgery are\ndone for the wet form of AMD. Laser photocoagulation is used to burn the\nabnormal blood vessels that have grown under the retina to reduce the risk of additional\nvision loss that would occur as the wet AMD progresses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is also used to treat\nwet AMD. A light-sensitive medication is injected into an arm vein, and the dye\ntravels to highlight the abnormal blood vessels that have grown under the\nretina. Once highlighted, the surgeon uses a laser to block further growth of\nthose blood vessels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both procedures may have to be periodically\nrepeated.
