Glaucoma is caused by pressure buildup in the internal\neye. Over time, it can cause sight loss. You might be asking yourself, \u201cWhat is\nthe first sign of glaucoma?\u201d Unfortunately, this disease often has no early\nsigns or symptoms, so an annual thorough eye exam is truly the only way to recognize\nglaucoma\u2019s early warning signs. Forms of the Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are two forms of glaucoma:\nopen-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is certainly the\nmost common; it affects around three million Americans and many millions more\nworldwide. This form of glaucoma progresses very slowly and typically has no\nwarning signs or symptoms, explaining why it is called the silent thief of\nsight. Most people can have open-angle glaucoma for several years before any\nsymptoms or noticeable vision loss occur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the eye\u2019s natural\ndrainage canals become clogged and internal pressure builds and damages the\noptic nerve. An eye exam\nis the only way to detect the optic nerve damage caused by the fluid and\npressure buildup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do start\nexperiencing vision loss, it will usually first occur in your peripheral vision\nor in your side vision, both of which are harder for patients to really notice.\nAs glaucoma worsens, your visual sharpness (called visual acuity) does not\nchange, so you can see why most people do not notice any symptoms. By the time\nmost patients do notice significant vision loss, the glaucoma is quite\nadvanced. Unfortunately, we cannot reverse any vision loss that has already\noccurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nother form of glaucoma is called angle-closure glaucoma. It is a much rarer\ncondition that develops very rapidly and typically only affects one eye. This\nform of glaucoma does have quite a few noticeable signs that appear quickly and\nworsen in just a matter of a few hours. Symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma\ninclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
